The Mustering Elm Park 1/2 mile east Trinity Springs, Indiana is the site where the 65th Indiana Regiment mustered (gathered) under a large elm tree in preparation for battle in the Civil War of 1861.
The site is also within a few yards of the natural sulfur springs and swimming pool enjoyed by thousands during Trinity Springs’ ‘heyday’. A large luxury hotel was located about 1/4 mile west of the current Indian Creek Bridge on the south side of the highway.
The park area, including the springs and swimming pool were cleared of decades of trees and under growth and partially restored by a dedicated group of local citizens and historical preservationists. Thanks to their physical & financial sacrifice his historical site is now a public park enjoyed by many.
To see a satellite view of the park courtesy of Google Maps, click the link below. A shelter house and electric utilities have been added since the image was created but all else is pretty much the same.
The rectangular object on the image is the swimming pool and the still active sulfur springs is the white area directly to the north.
The road at the left side of the image leads north to the remains of the Trinity Springs dam and grist mill’s original foundation on Indian Creek. Local farmers transported their grain to this location for processing and shipment by train. The old rail bed still runs off to the west but the rails and ties have long since disappeared. As a child, I remember a large round mill stone near the dam but it too has vanished. My family & friends spent many enjoyable days and nights camping and swimming on the upper side of this historic structure.
